11-year-old boy injured in Aberdeen, 40 rounds shot into house

An 11-year-old boy was injured Wednesday when 40 shots were fired into a Moore County home.

The Aberdeen Police Department and the Moore County Sheriff's Office both responded to a home in Aberdeen.

Investigators said 40 rounds from three different caliber weapons were fired into the home, and the boy was struck in the arm.

"He was back at home before we left the scene that morning," Aberdeen Police Chief Carl Colasacco said.

No one else was hit, police said.

The child was treated and released from a hospital.

Police said there were six people sleeping inside the home

"Somebody was upset with somebody," Colasacco said.

Bullets hit the home from the roof to its foundation. A car also had windows shot out.

Contractors were at the scene Thursday fixing what they could.

The home is in a Habitat for Humanity neighborhood. Neighbors know each other and say it's quiet.

Colasacco said Aberdeen police are working with Southern Pines police.

"They had a shooting the day before at a residence and we feel like it's being linked," Colasacco said.

Authorities aren't ruling out the possibility the shooting was targeted.

"We feel like they were trying to retaliate," Colasacco said.

Nearby Aberdeen homeowners spoke with WRAL News on Thursday but did not want to appear on camera with the shooters still at large.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Vaughn at the Aberdeen Police Department at 910-944-4554. The anonymous tip line is 910-844-4561.
