Chapel Hill town leaders have begun sifting through applications from people wanting to be the town's next police chief.

Forty people submitted applications for the vacant chief of police position, town human-resources officials said.

Chapel Hill re-posted the job on June 29 after former Fayetteville Police Chief Tom McCarthy was unable to accept an appointment due to health reasons.

Former Chief Gregg Jarvies retired in April after 30 years with the department. He is serving on the panel investigating the Durham Police Department's handling of the Duke lacrosse case.

Maj. Brian Curran is the interim police chief.
