3-year-old boy killed in Charlotte shot himself, police say

WCNC Charlotte reports a 3-year-old died Wednesday after a shooting in Charlotte.

The shooting occurred on Eastway Drive near Central Avenue around 5:30 p.m. A patient was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the incident was an assault with a deadly weapon. The toddler died at the hospital, police said.

CMPD said the toddler, a boy, likely shot himself after getting access to a handgun. He was at home with a parent. The department also urged parents to keep firearms properly stored.
