WCNC Charlotte reports three people were killed Monday following an incident at a construction site just outside of Uptown.

Chief Jackie Gilmore said the accident occurred around 9 a.m. when scaffolding collapsed. Three workers died.

According to officials, the incident happened on East Morehead Street, which is near the Dowd YMCA.

Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on scene all day  investigating.

Charlotte Fire Captain Jackie Gilmore explained what happened.

"When firefighters arrived on scene, we had scaffolding that had collapsed and workers that had fallen from the scaffolding. Unfortunately, we had three workers pronounced deceased on scene and also firefighters were able to access two additional workers and render first aid," said Gilmore. "Those injuries, those patients were turned over with minor injuries to Mecklenburg County EMS where they were transported to area hospitals."

Captain Gilmore said the two construction workers with minor injuries were transported to area hospitals.

Officials are still trying to figure out exactly what caused this to happen.
