Two people were hospitalized after making an emergency landing Thursday morning in a soybean field.

Two people had minor injuries after making an emergency landing Thursday morning in a North Carolina soybean field about three hours into a training flight after they ran out of fuel.

It happened at about 7 a.m. Thursday in Camden County, according to Camden County Sheriff Kevin Jones.

Authorities took the student pilot – Oh Honggyun, 23, of Flushing, New York – and the instructor – Alyssa Simeon, 23, of Brightwater, New York – to the Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, for observation.

The Piper Cherokee Archer II aircraft had minimal damage to the landing gear, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Authorities weren’t sure when the plane would get removed from the field, which is between Bartlett Road and Pond Road.

The plan was for Honggyun and Simeon to travel to Elizabeth City, refuel and return to New York. An investigating trooper said Simeon took control of the plane and made the emergency landing upon learning it had run out of gas.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.
