Durham police search for fake Amazon worker stealing packages

The Durham Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect impersonating an Amazon delivery worker and stealing packages.

At approximately 12:29 p.m. on May 8, a FedEx employee drops off a package outside of a home in the 100 block of Monticello Avenue.

"I was in shock. I was horrified," the Homeowner said. 

Approximately two minutes later, the suspect in an Amazon work vest walks up to the door of the home, grabs the package that was just dropped off by FedEx, and replaces it with an empty package.

"I felt violated and I was angry that somebody would come on my property and take something like that," Homeowner said. 

WRAL News asked the homeowner if they were concerned that the suspect might target other people.

"Oh yeah possibly. He had a plan. He had an empty box, with somebody else’s name on it. From another city," Homeowner said.

Keep your packages safe with these delivery tips to prevent theft

• Track it: Most shipping companies offer free tracking numbers. Use them to see when your package arrives and plan accordingly.
• Sign for it: Consider requiring a signature upon delivery for important packages. This ensures someone is there to receive it.
• Schedule your delivery: If possible, choose a delivery date and time when you'll be home.
• Pick it up: Many carriers allow holding packages at their location for pick-up at your convenience.
• Discreet drop-off: Request packages to be left at a side or back door, or on an enclosed porch, if available.
• Deliver to work: If possible, have work deliveries sent to your office for safekeeping.
• Neighborly help: Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye out for your package and hold it until you return.
• Delivery instructions: Leave a note for the carrier with specific instructions on where to leave your package (e.g., behind the plant).
• Report missing packages: If your package doesn't arrive as expected, contact the sender immediately.

• Call 911: Report a crime in progress.
• Provide details: Give the dispatcher a description of the suspect(s) and any vehicles involved.
