A driver is charged after police say he crashed into a Raleigh home early Thursday morning. One man died, and four others were seriously injured.

Jelson Molina Carbajal, 28, is charged with driving while impaired, felony death by vehicle, felony serious injury by vehicle (2 counts), reckless driving to endanger and no operators license.

According to police, around 2:15 a.m., Carbajal was driving a 2016 Ford Explorer, traveling eastbound in the 1400 block of New Bern Avenue.

Police said Carbajal attempted to turn left on Poole Road but hit the curb on the right side of New Bern Avenue, losing control of the vehicle. His car traveled across Poole Road and onto a sidewalk, striking Demetrius Smith, 47, and two other men sitting in front of a home.

Smith died from his injuries, and the others were transported to a hospital.

At least eight EMS trucks and more than 20 Raleigh police officers responded to the scene, authorities said.
