Former Texas A&M, LSU QB Max Johnson commits to North Carolina

North Carolina football may have found its heir to Drake Maye.

Former Texas A&M and LSU quarterback Max Johnson announced his commitment to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in a Twitter post on Wednesday afternoon.

“Excited to be a Tar Heel,” Johnson wrote. “Let’s Go!”

Maye is not expected to return to Chapel Hill for the 2024 season. He is widely expected to be a top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

As a graduate transfer, Johnson will be immediately eligible to play for the Tar Heels.

Johnson is expected to compete with Conner Harrell for the Tar Heels' starting quarterback position in the 2024 season.

After Texas A&M fired head coach Jimbo Fisher, Johnson decided to enter the transfer portal. Former Duke head coach Mike Elko will replace Fisher at Texas A&M.

In 2023, Johnson lost the Aggies’ starting quarterback position to sophomore signal-caller Connor Weigman in fall camp. However, Weigman suffered a season-ending lower-body injury on Sept. 23 against Auburn.

Johnson played from 2022-2023 at Texas A&M. He played from 2020-2021 at LSU.

In 2023, Johnson completed 118 of 190 pass attempts for 1,452 yards. He threw nine touchdowns and five interceptions.

Johnson is a left-handed quarterback, who is listed at 6'6" and 230 pounds.

Throughout Johnson's career, he has completed 474 passes out of 784 attempts for 5,853 yards and 47 touchdowns. He has thrown 12 interceptions.
