Raleigh residents capture sound of gunshots on security video, concerned about crime in Glenwood South

Glenwood South and Forest Park residents are raising their concerns after hearing gunfire early Sunday morning.

Residents Nancy Johnson and her husband Mike Lindsay’s Ring doorbell captured the sound of gunshots after 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

“I’m thinking, once again, it’s after 2 a.m. and that’s when the bad stuff happens from Glenwood South on down Peace Street,” Johnson said.

On Saturday, Raleigh police arrested a man for murder. The arrest was tied to the deadly assault of Midwood Smokehouse general manager David Millette.

In the past 30 days, Raleigh police have responded to reports of dozens of other crimes.

“I’m all for economic development in Glenwood South,” Johnson said. “I just wish there was something people could do to keep people with guns from doing it again.”

Raleigh police and the city council have stepped up throughout the summer, with increased patrols and street closures on Glenwood Avenue. In June, the city increased parking fines in the area.

Residents are split on whether this is making a difference with most saying crime continues to be an issue.

Lindsay mentioned having the Downtown Raleigh Alliance sponsor ambassadors who could work with or in addition to Raleigh police officers to have more eyes for crime. Johnson mentioned how she wants to see more security cameras.
