No censure vote for Durham City Councilwoman Monday night

Residents in Durham Monday were hoping to get answers after an explosive City Council meeting March 23, but were left with more questions.

The Durham City Council was expected to vote on Monday night whether to censure Councilwoman Monique Holsey-Hyman, but that vote did not happen.

The mayor of Durham made it clear the council should stay focused on the job at hand.

"I ask that we allow law enforcement to do its job, while we continue to stay focused and move our city forward," said Mayor Elaine O'Neal.

Holsey-Hyman is accused of having a city staffer do campaign-related work for her. She has said she was not clear on the council rules as a new member.

Also, Holsey-Hyman is accused of telling a developer she would support his project if he donated to her campaign.

The allegations have led to high tensions among the city council, including a screaming match between Councilwoman DeDreana Freeman and Mayor Pro-Tempore Mark-Anthony Middleton at a city council work session on March 23.

"I will be making no further comments on this while it is under investigation," O'Neal said. "And I would ask all to do the same."

Freeman had no comment Monday night regarding the outburst.
