Durham mayor addresses gun violence after recent shootings

Durham Mayor Elaine O'Neal addressed ongoing gun violence in her city during Monday's City Council meeting. The comments come as Durham police investigate separate weekend shootings that left two people dead.

During the meeting, O'Neal said she is not willing to share with the media how she is tackling the violence in Durham. O'Neal said the relationships she and other city leader5s are building with those in the streets is very fragile.

"I've got calls from reporters daily asking me to speak about gun violence and what I'm doing. This is not a space that I will speak into publicly because there is a lack of trust between the government and the folks that I'm dealing with, and I can't compromise this trust-building relationship," said O'Neal.

Residents who called in during the public hearing portion of the meeting stressed their frustrations and hurt with dealing with gun violence.

In the most recent shooting, two men were killed and two others were injured during a home invasion at the Cadence RTP Apartments.

O’Neal did indicate there are people in the streets addressing crime in various areas in the city. She also pointed to a recent retreat held at a Durham church to address crime.
