2012-13 Children's Series: BSC Kids at the Broad Street Cafe
For a few years now, Broad Street Cafe in Durham has been offering free shows for families on Sunday afternoons. They run from October through March on the first and third Sunday of each month starting around 4:30 p.m. It's all free (though the performers do appreciate tips or donations).
The series features some pretty amazing talent for families, starting off with Big Bang Boom, the Greensboro-based power pop trio that I've written about before. But you'll also find performers who play in "adult" bands hanging with the kids in this series.
If you know the local music scene, then you'll probably recognized some of these other performers. They include Lynda Dawson from the Kickin Grass Band, who plays in Little Root for families, or her musical partner Sally Mullikin from Justin Robinson & The Mary Annettes. There's John Currie from Jon Shain Trio (and many other bands) in Flying Hippo for kids. And then there's Peter Holsapple of the dBs who has played with R.E.M. and Hootie and the Blowfish and sometimes plays with Baron Von Rumblebuss.
"Some of these bands have some amazing hidden talent," Broad Street's John Hite tells me. I'm going to have to agree.
