Car, pickup collide on NC 42, killing two people

Two people were killed in a Wednesday afternoon crash on N.C. Highway 42 near its intersection with Interstate 40 in Johnston County, authorities said.

Several other people were hurt in the 2:30 p.m. crash, which involved a sedan and a pickup and left one vehicle on fire, authorities said.

Sincere Corbett, 20, of Clayton, was eastbound and tried to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone, according to the State Highway Patrol. He then lost control of his Chevrolet Malibu, crossed the centerline and collided with a westbound Chevrolet pickup, authorities said.

The Malibu burst into flames, but an off-duty firefighter quickly arrived on the scene and used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire, authorities said.

Corbett and his front-seat passenger, Jamal Hicks Jr., 19, of Clayton, were killed. Two back-seat passengers, whose names haven't been released, were taken to WakeMed in Raleigh for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pickup, William Coats, 75, of Garner, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at WakeMed.

Investigators said Corbett was traveling 90 to 95 mph before the crash.

N.C. 42 was closed in both directions at Son-Lan Parkway, causing lengthy backups, while State Highway Patrol troopers investigated the crash and cleared the wreckage from the highway.
