Drivers nervous after rash of road rage shootings

Police are searching for the gunmen involved in three recent road-rage shootings as incidents of gun violence spike along Triangle highways and roads.

The shootings do not appear to be related. Local drivers told WRAL News they’re being a little more cautious as road rage shootings become a growing problem.

On roadways these days, people appear to be letting their emotions get the best of them behind the wheel.

On Highway 70 near Page Road in Durham, investigators said the driver of a white Nissan Maxima shot at people in a pickup truck early Sunday morning, reportedly after the pickup truck driver side-swiped the driver of the sedan.

For Tiffany Green, who’s taking time to get familiar with North Carolina roads after moving here less than a week ago, it's scary.

"Someone that is unhinged that can do something just that crazy," said Green. "It is very scary."

Investigators said the driver of the truck pulled over after being shot. Two passengers in the truck who weren’t shot were assaulted.

The shooter was still on the run Monday night.

Christopher Balgowan, a former Wake County sheriff’s deputy, told WRAL News he saw his fair share of road rage shootings while on the force for years.

"It is a big, big problem. It is a huge problem," said Balgowan. "It certainly needs to be addressed more because of the situation happening in the community."

Police are still trying to find the person accused of shooting a man on April 21.

Sky 5 showed that road rage shooting causing hours-long traffic delays on Highway 15/501.

And on April 12, a man died following another road rage shooting in Durham.

Green said it feels like one’s life is at risk while on the road these days.

"A lot of people, they have a lot of things pent up. Small things like a brake light or somebody flipping you the bird can really set you up," said Green.

If you find yourself in an incident like this, officers said to call 911 and pull off somewhere, but do not engage.

Gun Violence Archives, a non-profit based in DC, found that more than 500 people had been injured or killed in reported road rage shootings in 2021, up from fewer than 300 in 2019.
