Virginia fisherman drowns off coast of Hatteras Island

A 46-year-old man from Falls Church, Virginia drowned off the coast of Hatteras Island on Friday night.

At around 9:30 p.m., a visitor reported finding a body floating at the south end of Hatteras Island at Pole Road.

The man's family said that he was surf fishing on Friday before he drowned.

Waves were as high as 13 feet that day off the coast of Hatteras Island, officials said.

The victim's name was not released.
