4 charged in murder of missing Durham 19-year-old

Four people have been charged in the 2023 fatal shooting of 19-year-old Semar Barbour.

Barbour was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in the backseat of his car in Morrisville on Nov. 13 after disappearing for weeks. He had been reported missing from Durham, North Carolina, on Oct. 23.

On Friday, April 19, Durham police said three men and one woman were charged in connection with Barbour’s murder, which police said happened in October. Photos were provided of the three men.

  • Phillip Maurice Williams Jr., 18, of Durham (Charges: Murder and conspiracy to commit murder)
  • Nakia Montell Williams, 48, of Durham (Charges: Murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and concealment of death)
  • Theodore Cash, 68, of Durham (Charges: Accessory after the fact (Murder))
  • Shelia Frazier Cash, 68, of Durham (Charges: Accessory after the fact (Murder))

Morrisville Police Chief Pete Acosta said the investigation into the death of Barbour was only the second homicide of 2023 for the department. In 2022, there were no homicides in Morrisville.

"It's a bit of a shock to the conscience," Acosta said. "We understand this is a tragedy to a lot of folks."

Barbour's family and friends took to the streets of Durham to search for him following his disappearance. It wasn't until weeks later that neighbors in Morrisville contacted the police about a man who appeared to be sleeping in the backseat of a car.

"We don’t know of any associates or family that he may have in Morrisville," Acosta said.

Investigators are trying to piece together how Barbour’s body was found miles away from Durham.
