The granddaughter of the late Mildred Council, founder of Chapel Hill's popular Mama Dip's Restaurant, has opened her own restaurant inside the NC Museum of History.
Tonya Council recently opened Sweet Tea & Cornbread Grill and Eatery at the downtown Raleigh museum. The restaurant serves up lots of Southern staples like barbecue, chicken salad, fried green tomatoes and sweet tea, along with lighter fare, kid-friendly favorites and desserts. Council began waitressing at her grandmother's original restaurant when she was a teenager and, according to a press release, has continued her passion for the restaurant industry ever since.
“I’m thrilled to open the Sweet Tea & Cornbread Grill and Eatery at the N.C. Museum of History,” said Council in a press release. “I grew up surrounded by classic Southern food, so the museum is the perfect venue to both continue that legacy while exploring more modern iterations of my family’s signature dishes.”

Prices run from about $4.95 for a hot dog platter to $10.50 for for the daily special, according to a menu. Prices on the Kids' Menu, for kids ages 9 and under, are $4.95 or $5.95. Items include a hot dog with chips and a small drink and chicken tenders with fries and a drink. A side of cornbread is just 99 cents.
You can find Sweet Tea & Cornbread Grill and Eatery on the museum's R Level. It's open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays and Saturdays.
