Former Cary church youth worker charged with sex crime

A man who worked as a youth director at a Cary church has been arrested after law enforcement officers found child pornography in his possession.

David Nathan Kimball, 34, of Old Bellows Court in Raleigh, was charged with third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. He declined to comment after a brief court hearing Monday.

Cornerstone Presbyterian Church listed Kimball as its director of youth and young adults on its website.

In a statement, Pastor Fred Thrower said Kimball was hired in January 2016. Thrower said he learned of Kimball's arrest on Monday, and the church's governing body accepted Kimball's resignation at a meeting that evening.

Cary spokesman John Szymeczek said that a police investigation hasn’t determined a connection between the alleged crime and church members or children attending the church.

A cyber tip came from Microsoft via the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Szymeczek said. The tip said an image that was shared in a file-sharing service involved child pornography.

Kimball was arrested after a Cary police investigation.

A continuing investigation will include a computer forensic examination, Szymeczek said.
