The SBI agent involved in the shooting was identified as Denzel Ward, 29.

Armstrong said Sanchez and a woman, who was not identified, were inside the store.

"The female allegedly grabbed some box of ammunition that was sitting on the counter display, and stole the box of ammunition and ran out of the store with that box of ammunition," Armstrong said. "And, the male that was with her, ran out of the store with her."

Witnesses, callers describe chaos of the shooting

On Wednesday, Apex police released the 911 calls from Tuesday afternoon's shooting.

Several callers called from a nearby restaurant.

"There were two gunshots," one caller said.

"I think somebody has been shot," another caller said. "They said they need an ambulance and asked me to call please."

Another caller said he saw the two men and woman fighting on the ground.

"I see a gun, hurry, hurry up," the caller said. "I think there's one person dead on the ground."

Another The person on the ground that was shot just now, he is completely unresponsive," another caller said.

A witness said she had no idea what was initially happening when she pulled up to a Starbucks near the scene.

"I pulled into the parking with lights on and I thought, 'That was weird,'" the witness said. "Then you saw more policemen taping off the parking lot, and you are like, 'Is everyone okay?'"

SBI agent placed on leave

The SBI said Ward was on duty at the time of the shooting.

The two people encountered the SBI agent in the parking lot, Armstrong said. He did not know why the SBI agent was there.

"I'm not aware of them being there for any type of investigation, but we don't know exactly the reason for that," Armstrong said.

WRAL News learned Ward was placed on administrative leave.

Dayve's mother, Esperanza Sanchez, told WRAL News that the female he was with had a gun, not Dayve. The mother also showed proof that Dayve made a purchase at Academy for $32.16.

"I feel so angry, so angry," said Esperanza Sanchez. "I feel there is no point to be in this world."

His girlfriend, Bryhaja Bloodsworth, said Dayve loved animals and was generally a happy person.

"He was a happy person," said Bloodsworth. "He always had a smile on his face, even when it was raining, he would want to play in the rain."

On Tuesday, a gun could be seen on the ground near a car and yellow caution tape around the store.

"There was another weapon that was at the scene next to the male that was shot, and we believe that was his weapon," Armstrong said. "We're still sorting through if that weapon was used or how that weapon might have been used."

"We still don't know that at this time."

Armstrong said the woman was not shot, but authorities took her to an area hospital for a medical evaluation. He did not release the identities of the man or woman.

"I did reach out and contact the [Wake County] District Attorney, Lorrin Freeman, along with the leadership of the SBI to just make sure that we handle this with the utmost sensitivity since it was an officer-involved shooting," Armstrong said.

Apex police will investigate Tuesday afternoon's shooting, and the SBI will conduct an internal affairs investigation of the investigator.

Police said the community is not in danger.

Academy Sports + Outdoors released a statement about the shooting.

"We are sorry about this unfortunate incident and are grateful for the quick actions of the first responders," the statement read. "We have made ourselves available to the Apex Police as they investigate this ongoing situation and refer all questions to them."

Investigators are interviewing witnesses, reviewing physical and electronic records and analyzing forensic evidence.

The investigation is ongoing.
