Cary looks to grow up

A town that used to be known for sprawling out, Cary is now looking at growing up.

Earlier this month, the Cary Town Council changed zoning to allow the Fenton, a 90-plus-acre development along Cary Towne Boulevard, including a more vertical mix of retail, offices and apartments. Throughout Cary, older projects are being reworked, and empty spots are being filled with new development.

"Cary's history is that we grew out and continue to grow. We have a limited capacity now for that ability to continue to see that type of just growing out," said Ted Boyd, the town's economic development director. "So, we are looking at, in the right spots, how do we have more dense development."

The owners of MacGregor Village Shopping Center plan to spend millions of dollars to revitalize the property.

Klingspor's Woodworking Shop moved to MacGregor Village from its 20-year home in Raleigh and now has signed a 10-year lease in Cary.

"Business was OK where we were, but it is much better here," manager Paul Rolfe said. "It seemed like an area that was growing."
