17-year-old shot, killed in Sanford

A 17-year-old from Sanford died early Thursday from a gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Officers responding to a report of shots fired found Shamika Nikkia Lett, 17, lying in the street Wednesday night shortly after 8 p.m.

Paramedics took Lett to Central Carolina Hospital. She was later transported by helicopter to UNC Hospitals where she died, police said.
