Franklin County is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old who was involved in a bad car crash earlier this month.

Her family decided she would give the gift of life to others.

On February 10th, Madison Nelms was on her way to school when she was involved in a car crash. Just a mile from her home in Franklin County.

Her parents, Pam and Adam Nelms, told WRAL News they've received an outpour of support, but they are still finding ways to cope with the loss.

Madison Nelms had just turned 16 and was excited about finally getting her driver's license.

"She just couldn't wait to have some freedom and go out and do things with her friends," said Pam Nelms. "This is our worst nightmare, this is something we never wanted to go through."

On the 15th her parents were told Madison Nelms had lost all brain activity. They decided she would give the gift of life.

"The way we were kinda told her heart didn't stop beating at all," said Adam Nelms. "They took it out and took it to the recipient so that gives us hope."

White Level Baptist Church in Louisburg was the home church of Madison Nelms. She spent a lot of time here helping with the children's ministry.

She always dreamed of having a beach house.

"We all miss her and I love her deeply," said Pam Nelms.

Madison's parents are encouraging other families and other people to consider being an organ donor.
