Toddler falls from apartment balcony, rushed to hospital

Raleigh police were investigating after a 16-month-old toddler fell from a second story apartment on Wednesday night.

Officials got a call around 8:20 p.m. to Edgewater Apartments in the 7500 block of Cove Point Drive, which is near Lake Lynn in Raleigh. It wasn't clear how the baby fell but officials said he was conscious, crying and breathing when EMS arrived.

He was rushed to WakeMed Hospital for further observation.

Neighbors we talked with said they heard a fire truck and saw a woman holding a baby crying. They also said they felt helpless as they watched crews rush the baby away.

"Anything with a child makes me want to know what happened, I want to help out," said Heather Lis, a neighbor at the apartment complex. "I saw they had enough hands out there and me being down there, would not of been able to do anything, I just wanted to stay outside to see if they are OK, a laugh or cry, anything."

Another neighbor said the child pushed through a screen.

"I heard a scream from a parent and saw a parent holding a baby. Didn't see any blood or anything that alarmed me immediately. So, I went back in the house. The engine was here very, very quickly," said Patrick Myers, who lives nearby.

There was no word late Wednesday night if the child suffered any noticeable injures.
