Police: Cary man exposed himself at several businesses in last 6 months

The man accused of exposing himself on Monday at a Cary gift shop was charged Wednesday with six counts of indecent exposure at businesses around Cary.

Christopher Vincent Sumrell, 25, of 105 Ribbon Lane, Cary, was charged after six victims said he exposed himself in public, according to arrest warrants. The incidents occurred between Jan. 20 and Aug. 2 this year at six different businesses: Pier 1 Imports, Petco, Sleepy's Mattress Firm, Stein Mart, Vom Fass and Lynn's Party Plus.

Julie Grinsler, the store owner at VOM VASS, said she didn't think anything of Sumrell when he entered her business.

"He just seemed like a normal guy. He told me which bottle (of vinegar) he wanted," she said.

But, what Grinsler said happened next was not normal.

"I came back to the register to ring him out and I looked up and he had exposed himself to me," Grinsler said.

Employees at SteinMart had a similar experience. They said Sumrell came out of a changing room partially undressed.

"He just took it out of his pants and just flashed it," said Jutta Richards the store manager.

Richards said she and her associates were completely caught off guard.

"You shouldn't do anything like this. My associates was very very upset," she said.

Sumrell was jailed under a $10,000 secured bond.

Sumrell was previously charged with several counts of indecent exposure at locations around Raleigh, including while he was a student at William Peace University in 2013. He was convicted in another case from 2011 when police said he was in his car in a CVS parking lot and he revved his engine to get attention before exposing himself to passing women.

"I'm very glad he's been arrested. I understand he has been arrested multiple times and I don't understand why he keeps getting let out," Grinsler said.
