150,000 square feet of fire trucks, equipment: Annual fire rescue expo to open doors for free to public this week

On Friday and Saturday, the Expo floor at the Raleigh Convention Center will be open for free to the public. And I'm told that there will be a bunch of emergency vehicles to check out.

The South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo's fire truck parade rolled down Fayetteville Street on Saturday.

If you're a longtime Go Ask Mom reader, you know that there used to be an annual fire truck parade in town.

To the delight of many young fire truck-loving kids, fire trucks of all vintages would roll down Fayetteville Street. The event was part of the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo, which brings fire and emergency professionals and vendors to Raleigh.

Here's a look at the parade from a few years ago ...

Well, last year, there was no parade. The Expo was in Charlotte. It's back in Raleigh this year, but, sadly, there's no fire truck parade.

BUT ... there is still something for families. On Friday and Saturday, the Expo floor at the Raleigh Convention Center will be open for free to the public. And I'm told that there will be a bunch of emergency vehicles to check out.

"This year we will not have a parade, but the exhibit hall is free and open to the public," Kris Wyatt, marketing and conference manager, told me in an email. "There will be more than 150,000 square feet of fire apparatus and equipment that we welcome the public to come enjoy on Aug. 10 and 11."

To get in, Wyatt tells me that you'll just need to grab a wristband before going on the floor.

When I asked if these vehicles will be available for kids to check out, Wyatt responded, "yes, absolutely!"

The Expo's website has more information about the event. It sounds like this could be a fun, free day out for lots of families around here.
