Wake deputy dragged by car during traffic stop; suspect shot

A Wake County deputy suffered minor injuries Friday night after being dragged by a car during a traffic stop on Wimberly Road in Apex, the Wake County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputy Ricky Spivey stopped Michael Joseph Morgan, of 1129 Wimberly Road, less than half a mile from his home about 7:30 p.m., officials said.

During the stop, Morgan left the scene, dragging Spivey with his vehicle. Deputy Casey Miller, who had arrived at the traffic stop to assist Spivey, fired shots at Morgan's car, hitting him twice. 

Morgan, who has been charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, was taken to Duke Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. Spivey suffered minor injuries. 

The Wake County Sheriff's Office said the State Bureau of Investigation is now in charge of the investigation, which is standard in officer-involved shootings. 

Deputy Spivey was in good condition Saturday night and is not expected to miss any days of work. Morgan's condition was unknown. 

No other information about the shooting was released.
