A Wake County Democrat has been chosen as the leader of his party’s House freshman caucus.
Duane Hall is a real estate attorney who’s never held elected office before. His Cary-area district is officially new, but it’s made up of portions of the old districts of Democrat Jennifer Weiss and Republican Nelson Dollar.

"I was in a situation that most of the other freshmen didn’t have – I was unopposed in November, so I actually had a lot more time to go out and help other candidates. And I found that organization and helping other candidates is something I really enjoy doing,” Hall said.
He says a lot of people think the freshman caucus leader job is political, but it’s really more organizational. “You help the other freshmen members bring in more educated, more experienced legislators to really help train us in what needs to be done.”
Hall says the biggest challenge for his freshman caucus will be figuring out how to contribute in a GOP–dominated house - “the small ways we can tweak legislation, be effective in committees, offer amendments.”
