The residents of a boarding house on Dupree St. in Durham have been displaced due to a fire that left their home severely damaged.

A fire at a boarding house on the 600 block of Dupree St. in Durham has displaced five people and hospitalized one.

Fire crews from the Durham Fire Department were dispatched around 4:10 a.m. The first arriving units reported a two-story residential fire with flames visible through the second floor.

Officials said within 15 minutes there were 30 firefighters on the scene and the fire was extinguished.

The house sustained severe fire damage to the second floor with smoke and water damage throughout the house, according to officials.

One occupant was transported to Duke University Medical Center by Durham County EMS for breathing problems, but is expected to be okay after treatment. The American Red Cross has stepped in to assist the displaced residents.

The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation.
