The Coast Guard pulled two crew members from Pamlico Sound after their vessel sank overnight Tuesday, the agency said. One person died. Another person was hypothermic and was taken to a hospital in Elizabeth City.

Two crew members were still missing in the water as the Coast Guard continued their search Wednesday.

Tuesday night the Coast Guard’s Fifth District command center received a distress signal from an emergency position indicating a radio beacon registered to fishing vessel Papa’s Girl.

In response, the Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet sent a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat, and Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew. Wednesday night, officials said a second Motor Lifeboat crew was sent out to assist in the search.

“This is a rough case and as we continue to search, our thoughts are with the families of the mariners,” said Matthew Brooks, search and rescue coordinator for the case.

The identities of the crew have not yet been released.
