'What's all this hairy stuff?': Clayton woman finds black widow in grapes
A Clayton woman was horrified after realizing that a black widow spider was living in grapes she bought from a Garner store.
Patti Kanter and her daughter had no idea that their bag of fruit was home to an eight-legged resident when her daughter was eating the grapes earlier this week.
"She looked down and said, 'Mom, what's all this hairy stuff on the grapes?' And then, she looked down again and saw the spider," Kanter said.
A female black widow spider is considered the most venomous spiders in North America, according to livescience.com.
"She saw the hourglass on the belly, and she said, 'It's a black widow spider, Mom.' I said, 'Oh my gosh,’" Kanter said.
Kanter bought the seedless grapes from BJ's Wholesale in Garner last week.
"I rinsed them off when we first got them home because my husband and I had been picking out of them all week," she said.
When Kanter notified the BJ's store manager of what happened, she said they apologized for her experience.
"The quality of our produce is a top priority for us. We continually work with our suppliers to ensure that that our products meet our high standards. Given the natural environment in which produce is grown, it is possible for issues like this to happen. We are working directly with this member about her concerns," a spokesperson for BJ's said in a statement.
In the future, Kanter says she will do a better job of washing her fruit.
