'They just started shooting': Fayetteville shooting victim says he's lucky to be alive

One of the victims in the trio of shootings in Fayetteville on Saturday morning says he's lucky to be alive and is surprised more people were not shot.

Anthony Glover was standing outside a club at 4943 Bragg Blvd. just before 3:20 a.m. when a dark-colored SUV drove into the parking lot and hit the curb. Patrons in the parking lot began to exchange words with the driver of the SUV when someone inside the vehicle opened fire, police said.

"By the time anyone could say anything, they just started shooting," Glover said. "People (were) running everywhere."

Glover was shot in the leg. He says his brother, 20-year-old Jamal Hall, was shot in the head and remains hospitalized.

"He's basically in, I wouldn't say a full-fledged coma, but he's stuck in kind of a dream-like state where his brain is trying to heal itself," he said.

Police say they believe Luther Gatling, 23, of 208 Teague St., is responsible for the shootings at three different locations Saturday. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Glover questions whether Gatling was the man who shot him and his brother.

"The guy that was shooting at us, he (had) really dark skin, very dark skin, and I don't remember his hair being that long, neither," he said.

Gatling is also accused of shooting at a taxicab about 10 minutes later near B and Link streets. No one was injured in that shooting.

The third shooting occurred just after 4 a.m. in the 800 block of Orange Street. A woman was shot in the leg while standing in the front yard of her home. Again, witnesses described a dark SUV and a passenger firing from inside.

"It appears random," said Lt. James Nolette of the spree that took place over 30 minutes at locations along Bragg Boulevard.

Police described the three victims as innocent bystanders.

Officers recovered the SUV on Saturday and detained the driver and a passenger. They issued an arrest warrant for Gatling, who faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He is also wanted on a probation violation.

Gatling should be considered armed and dangerous.
