Harnett County, Apex shootings may be connected

When a person with a gunshot wound walked into the emergency room at a WakeMed in Apex, medical staff found it so unusual that they started asking questions.

Authorities were not identifying the person shot, but Apex police reached out to the Harnett County Sheriff's Office, where deputies were investigating a fatal shooting that left a 28-year-old man dead inside his home at 565 Arlie Ln. in Lillington Thursday afternoon.

That victim, Kyle Jarrett, was shot twice in the upper body and pronounced dead on the scene.

In a statement Friday morning, Maj. Jeff Huber of the Harnett County Sheriff's Office said they were aware of the Apex report, but it did not appear that it was related to Jarrett's murder.

Distraught family members said Jarrett was a student and had recently enjoyed working out and practicing yoga.

A neighbor told investigators he heard the shots.

When he came out to see what was going on, he saw what looked like a black Nissan driving away with two men inside.

“I ask folks to pray for this family,” Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats said. “No parent should have to bury their children, and again, it’s just a tragedy, and the only thing that we can do it help bring closure to this family, find who did this and put them in the court system.”

Jarrett's mother told WRAL News that she was at work when she received the call that her son had been shot and that EMS workers were trying to revive him.

She was later heartbroken to learn he had died.

Anyone with information on Jarett’s death should call 911.
