Driver rescued from flooding: 'You don't realize how deep it is'

A flooded portion of Holly Springs New Hill Road is closed on Monday after officials rescued a driver from a ditch.

Police say it was around 4:45 a.m. that the woman's car got stuck in heavy water on the side of the road.

The driver, who is shaken up but okay, said it was pitch black when she was driving to work, and she did not realize how deep the water was.

"If you see any standing water anywhere, just avoid it, because you don't realize how deep it is and how quickly it is moving," she told WRAL. "I was really worried it was going to take me and my little car away."

An official from the DOT was able to tie a rope to her car and bring her back to the road, but she said she was up to her knees when she first tried to escape.

The road is closed between between Cateswood Court and Ancient Oaks Drive.

A state of emergency was declared in Guilford County after a tornado touched down and at least one person died as a result of the weather. Authorities said the deceased person died when a tree fell onto a car.

Guilford County schools are also closed Monday while crews repair severe damages.
