Stories of struggling college students hit the heart

Students, all over this state, are putting tuition, books and their futures ahead of basic needs.

I was asked a simple question from a co-worker last week as we talked about my story about homelessness on college campuses.

"Did it affect you?" she asked. I quickly answered, "Yes."

This story affected me because I learned students, all over this state, are putting tuition, books and their futures ahead of basic needs.

There are students who are in class right now who don't know where they will sleep tonight. There are others who know their residence hall is closing for Thanksgiving and will have nowhere to go.

College is hard enough. Imagine trying to finish a degree while also fighting a system that provides very little help.

The young woman I talked to for this story is getting ready to graduate in the spring. She has dealt with homelessness, on some level, for the last four years. She makes no excuses and is now working to make the process easier in the future.

I hope you will watch this story Tuesday at 6 p.m. to learn more about a group of students that goes largely unnoticed on campuses all over the country.
