RALEIGH, N.C. — A winter weather advisory for the Triangle and the northwest portion of the viewing area expired Wednesday after more than a dozen early morning crashes were reported as drivers navigated icy roads.
The majority of the crashes took place in Durham and Orange counties, which saw several inches more snow than Wake County.

Although the last of the snow fell on Monday, temperatures were cooler Tuesday night than they were Monday, dipping into the 20s.

As a result, many surfaces were slick and coated with black ice and slippery patches for Wednesday morning's commute.

While icy patches roads across the Triangle remain a concern, icy spots are more prevalent in Durham and Orange counties, which canceled school for a third day Wednesday. Wake County was operating under a delay.

Around 8 a.m., a box truck overturned near on NC-98 near US-70 and Cheek Road in Durham, closing two lanes and causing significant back-ups. On I-40 in Durham, a crash closed the right westbound lane near Exit 280 for Davis Drive, and at least two crashes were reported on T.W. Alexander Drive, police confirmed.

At 6:30 a.m., more than 10 weather-related crashes were already reported in Orange County, officials confirmed. Estes Drive was completely shut down, and other crashes were reported along Raleigh Road at Hamilton Road, University Road near I-85, St. Mary's Road at Bivins Road and on Franklin Street.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Wake County and areas northwest. This is where we expect patches of black ice to form on secondary roads overnight. Join Greg and I on WRAL News this evening for a temp timeline for your morning commute! @wralweather

In Raleigh on Wade Avenue near Edwards Mill Road, a car slid off the road.

Most of the scenes have been cleared. No serious injuries were reported.
