State trooper charged with assault

A North Carolina state trooper is off patrol duty after being charged with assaulting a woman, officials said Thursday.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina state trooper is off patrol duty after being charged with assaulting a woman, officials said Thursday.

Timothy R. Askew, a sergeant based out of Raleigh, was placed on administrative duty Monday pending an internal investigation into the misdemeanor charge. Askew, who was arrested Monday, is scheduled in court July 25.

Details on the case were not immediately available.

Askew, 44, of Nashville, is an eight-year veteran of the State Highway Patrol.
