Democrat Janet Cowell is a former financial analyst who moved to North Carolina in 1997.

A former Raleigh City Council member, Cowell was elected to the state Senate in 2004 and 2006 before winning election as state treasurer in 2008.

As treasurer, Cowell has sole authority to manage the state's $70 billion pension fund for employees and retirees. Her office most often faces scrutiny for its management of the fund and recently drew attention for its involvement in a lawsuit over Facebook's initial public offering.
