FORT BRAGG, N.C. — North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered on Monday after the death of a Fort Bragg soldier.

Spc. Luis Herrera died from injuries sustained in a Humvee crash last Thursday during a training session on Fort Bragg. It's unclear what led to the crash, and authorities are still investigating the circumstances behind the accident.

Herrera was 23 years old and had a wife. He was described as an "exceptional paratrooper" and "engaged friend" by Col. Theodore Kleisner.

“We're mourning the loss of Spc. Luis Herrera who was tragically killed Thursday at Fort Bragg, and we’re praying for the recovery of the others who were hurt in the accident,” Kleisner said.

Citizens with flags, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are also encouraged to fly flags at half-staff on Monday.

Herrera enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 2017, as an infantryman, and he served two deployments to Kuwait.

The 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment plans to host a memorial for Herrera at some point.

Three other soldiers were injured in the crash. They are expected to recover.
