I'm terra Schramm the capitol site administrator and on behalf of the division of state historic Sites and the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Thank you for joining us tonight. Are you excited? I am excited. We are officially here to begin the holiday season in the Old North State. So please join me in welcoming our special guests. Governor Roy Cooper and First lady Christine cooper along with their family. Pastor Hadley Kifner, Secretary Reid Wilson and I think we are expecting one more important guest who's headed here from the North Pole. So we'll keep an eye out behind me stands our state christmas tree, a gorgeous, real crazy for lovingly grown right here in north Carolina. Once let this tree is meant to serve as a beacon of peace for our community and bring comfort and joy to all. For that reason the lighting of the capitol tree is one of our favorite events. Please join me in thanking those who come together to make it possible, especially the State capital Foundation. The Raleigh concert band led by conductor Lem Hardy. The holly Springs High School advanced course directed by Jennie Patch It it's Andrew web page, Massaro's and the junior Women's Club of Raleigh. Our wreath bearers jeremy would rem and Melanie taylor representing the capital docents. The north Carolina. Civil Air Patrol cadets climbed church nursery Campbell road nursery Carolina company and the capital doses for the interior decorations. Our colleagues across state government in the north Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, the Department of Administration, State capitol police and the office of the Governor and finally my very dedicated team here at the state capitol, thank you all so much. Tonight's indication will be given by the reverend Hadley Kifner who serves as pastor for spiritual nurture at University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill. She is an ordained united Church of christ minister and has most recently served as a pediatric chaplain for unC health care Pastor Kifner. I greet you each and all with grace and peace in the christian tradition. This holiday season is about the birth of a new way, a way of hope and love. It is about welcoming all serving with humility and walking in the way of justice and mercy in this spirit and with respect for each and all of you gathered here tonight I invite you to posture yourself however you feel most comfortable for prayer and take a deep breath of the winter air. Please join me now in this invocation, God of love and light. We gather waiting for the lights and waiting for all that you promise joy peace, love. We come from different backgrounds, orientations, values and cultures. You know this for you created us in your image yet we are here together under one moon and one sky of stars tonight and for this we give thanks. We believe that your holy spirit and gentle presence is among us now and that that spirit connects us to each other in ways that are mysterious and invisible yet significant and real bless us that we might be instruments of your grace by your Holy Spirit we pray, we've us into a community brilliant and beautiful, shining with your hospitality toward all Holy one. We confess that we wait not only for the lights tonight, but for something more. We wait for peace on earth and goodwill towards all become a reality in this time of waiting. May we hold the world in our hearts, and may we hold each other's hands in this time of waiting. May we be thoughtful and introspective, and may we delight in shared company in this time of waiting. May we rekindle the fires of hope, Love, joy and peace within ourselves and our communities. We pray your blessing upon us as we illumined this tree, May the light and sheer it gives me a sign of the possibility of peace that is to come. May all who delight in this treaty, be inspired to shine in the world with kindness and curiosity In Holy one. We pray especially for your blessing tonight to be upon any who feel lonely or sad or grieved or burdened those who feel unseen or unknown misunderstood or misplaced. May we be the warmth of your spirit. And so now as the bells ring, we offer this prayer to you with grateful hearts. And as we look for the light of the tree, let us be the light of the world. These places and the ideas they represent, create a shared identity among us as north Carolinians. Please welcome Secretary Wilson. Thank you Tara. Good evening everyone. It's a pleasure to be here with you tonight. My task is short. I am here to introduce to you the governor of the great state of north Carolina Roy cooper. He will come up for his remarks and then he and the first lady will lead us all in the countdown to the lighting of the tree. Governor cooper. Thank you. Secretary Wilson so glad to be here with my family. The first lady kristen two of my daughters, Natalie, you're just rehearsing and claire is here as well. Christmas trees bring so many memories back growing up remembering my dad putting birds on the trees. We have a lot to celebrate in this state. Farmers who grew these trees. Uh, I appreciate deeply my administration and everybody who works in state government, grateful for them are healthcare workers, our educators, our volunteers are non profits. Are churches, grateful for them, making our community stronger. We're grateful for our law enforcement, our firefighters, our first responders, our military and our veterans who worked so hard to keep us safe. I'm grateful for our small businesses are they are the backbone of our economy. Peak farms tonight, a small business of ashe county helped us with this tree. We're the second largest producer of christmas trees. And our tree is at the white, Excuse me in front of the capitol ruby, the red spruce, which is so exciting and I'm grateful for our wonderful diversity in our state. All different kinds of people coming together to form the best state in the country. Let's remember that we are here to care for each other, especially true at christmas And the holidays and we are at our very best when we come together to celebrate. So it's getting close here to the countdown, come on everybody over here, come on, everybody help us 10. Hey? Oh, very good. Wait a minute. I hear something. I hear something. I'm meteorologist, Kat Campbell and the wr severe weather center, the wr weather alert day will go into tomorrow. We have seen our first round of storms clear the area, but overnight we expect more storms to move in between about three and 9 a.m. Those should be more widespread but with a little bit less energy in the atmosphere, the primary concern there would be damaging winds and then we'll have a low storm threat as we head into tomorrow afternoon. So let's take a look at future casts. Storms continue to clear out from the early evening round. We should be dry 1011 midnight. It's not until about three or 4 a.m. that we begin to see storms move into our western counties and those are going to be with us during the early morning hours. 6 a.m. Rain could be around on a pretty widespread basis, impacting the morning commute. We'll see a good chance for rain seven perhaps lingering into 89 o'clock. After that, we should start to see the rain pushing out and storm chances would be pretty low for the remainder of the day. But in the morning, beware of rain and storms at the bus stop. You may want to wait in the car with your kids if you're able to, especially if there's any thunder or lightning around. Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner will keep you up to date on that starting at 430 tomorrow on wr news. So be sure to check in with her before you leave the house and head to the bus stop. The good news is storms clear out just in time for Saturday and Sunday. We'll still have some scattered storms around Friday afternoon. Saturday though, it is cooler. It's drier, not so humid. 74 partly cloudy, a 20% chance for rain. Very, very late Saturday night and most of us aren't going to see that 79 for Mother's Day on Sunday. It ends up being a beautiful and dry day for Mother's Day 59 at 8 a.m. 70 by lunchtime upper seventies for the afternoon. And we get a break from the big heat. No more nineties on our seven day forecast, high temperatures are going to be still above normal most days, but a bit closer to normal for this time of year in the seventies and eighties, at least Thursday remains a WRL weather alert day, at least during the morning hours. Friday, we've got some scattered storms a 50% chance. Those are more typical afternoon, summertime storms and then over the weekend things look pretty nice. Overall, the humidity drops in a significant way this weekend we stay pretty comfortable on Monday of next week, but late Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, we could see a soaking round of rain arrive. Certainly good news that we are seeing the rain around here. We just don't need these, the storm threat to go with it.
