Starbucks is banning employees from wearing accessories or clothes supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, according to an internal memo obtained by Buzzfeed News.

The memo tells staffers the messages are prohibited under the policy against accessories advocating a political, religious or personal issue.

However, employees told Buzzfeed the company not only allows employees to wear pins in support of LGBTQ equality -- it actively hands them out.

On Wednesday, the company said it plans to close up to 400 stores in the US and Canada over the next 18 months but add carryout and pick-up only locations.

Starbucks said it ultimately expects to open about 300 new North American stores that specialize in carryout and pickup options.

Although Starbucks was allowed to open its indoor dine-in areas on May 22 with other restaurants, some locations continue to operate drive-thru only.

The company said it was re-evaluating how it sells coffee prior to the COVID-19 pandemic due to customers in major cities already showing a greater tendency to order coffee on the go. In an email to CNN Business, the company said about 80% of transactions at nearly 15,000 US stores are "on-the-go" purchases.
