Texas and Ohio State, who will meet in the season opener for both teams, are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the preseason coaches poll released Monday.

Ohio State won the national title last season, defeating Texas in the semifinals. Penn State, another semifinalist, is No. 3, while Notre Dame, which reached the final against Ohio State, is No. 5. Georgia is ranked No. 4.

Clemson is the top ACC school in the rankings at No. 6. Clemson, which won the league last year and reached the 12-team playoff, was the overwhelming pick to win the ACC and placed 11 players on the preseason All-ACC team.

Oregon, Alabama, LSU and Miami round out the top 10.

The top seven teams all reached the 12-team College Football Playoff in 2024. The five other 2024 CFP participants Arizona State (11), SMU (16), Tennessee (18), Indiana (19) and Boise State (25) are also ranked.

Texas visits Ohio State on Aug. 30 at noon (FOX), a massive game in the first week of the season.

Duke, which went 9-4 in coach Manny Diaz’s first season in Durham, in the other receiving votes category with 12 points. NC State and North Carolina did not receive a single vote.

The Tar Heels and head coach Bill Belichick open the season with TCU, which also is in the others receiving votes list. TCU (9-4 in 2024) received 24 points in the poll.

Diaz and NC State’s Dave Doeren are among seven ACC coaches on the panel.
