Williams feeling ill, but he can still recruit!

Roy Williams was visibly uncomfortable during his mid-summer press conference this year, but it had nothing to do with the line of questioning. Williams is fighting through a bout with vertigo -- a condition which causes dizziness and a feeling of being out of balance.

Williams did manage a few of his trademark comedy quips despite his obvious discomfort. He joked that he was faking the condition to get more home cooking, and that after having his brain tested... doctors told him it was the largest they've ever seen.

So why was Roy Williams in such a good mood when most of us would be, well... grumpy at best?

Perhaps because one of the nation's top high school basketball players committed to play for UNC today. Ed Davis of Richmond, VA is ranked by Scout.com as the nation's #2 prospect overall in the Class of 2008. He's a power forward. And he's coming to Carolina -- his commitment became public not long after Roy Williams' press conference. Think maybe Roy knew something we didn't?

Of course Williams could not comment on Davis or any other recruits, but he did speak at length about the recruiting process. He's not bothered by the new restrictions on text messaging -- it's not exactly his preferred means of communication -- but he does admit that a few overzealous coaches probably abused it.

Williams also went on to say his program finished second in the recruiting process for a couple of players this year. (We can assume that means Delvon Roe and Jrue Holliday, both of whom committed elsewhere.) But today Ol' Roy lands a big fish. It's enough to put even an ailing man in a good mood.
