North Carolina State Wolfpack football's defensive coordinator, Tony Gibson, is leaving to become head coach for the Marshall Thundering Herd, the school officially announced on Sunday afternoon.
Football Scoop's John Brice first reported the news on Saturday night. Mashall's previous head coach, Charles Huff, was officially announced as the head coach at Southern Miss on Sunday.

"I'm super excited for Tony," NC State head coach Dave Doeren said on Sunday night. "He's earned it, he deserves it. He's been a great staff member, friend. Throughout his time in college football, he's made his mark."
Gibson had garnered attention from several schools with head coaching vacancies following the Wolfpack's 2024 season, and turned down an offer to become Charlotte's head coach.
"The 32nd Head Coach in the history of our program is coming home! He is a proud Boone County native with an enormous wealth of coaching experience that will continue to elevate and honor the tradition of success of Marshall Football," Marshall director of athletics Christian Spears said on Sunday.
Gibson, a West Virginia native, was in his fourth year as defensive coordinator at NC State and was nominated for the Broyles Award, which is given to the nation's top assistant coach, in 2021.
Gibson also coached several All-ACC linebackers, including Pittsburgh Steelers rookie and former Wolfpack linebacker Payton Wilson.
Doeren said nickels coach Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay will call the defense against ECU. Lindsay has coached the nickel position at NC State since the 2020 season.
