Bowling has been a favorite American pastime since the 1800s. It reached its heyday in the 1950s and ’60s when bowling became televised for the first time with programs such as Celebrity Bowling and Bowling for Dollars. Those tidbits are to share with your kids while you enjoy an evening at the lanes together. Or you can encourage your teens to have a safe night out with moonlight bowling.

Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre
The best throwback has to be the drive-in movie theatre, and Henderson has one! Open since 1949, it’s the oldest of the limited number of drive-ins left in North Carolina. Mark and Jennifer Frank have owned it since 2011, and as their website states, they “are dedicated to quality family entertainment for a great value.”
Every night is a double feature and your admission price entitles you to watch both movies. On pleasant evenings, bring a blanket or chairs and watch the movie directly under the stars. Come early so the kids can enjoy the on-site playground. The theatre offers a 1st-timer’s checklist to help you be ready for your big night under the stars and silver screen. Concessions from popcorn to full meals are available.
Additionally, check out the flea market held on Saturdays from March to October – come to buy or sell. Check the schedule for movie marathons, camping nights and performances by local bands.

• Middleburg Steakhouse & Seafood: Located in Middleburg just northeast of Henderson, you’ll find all the dishes you’d expect from a fine steakhouse: prime rib, filet mignon, and ribeye here. But the menu offers some interesting and different fare you might want to try, like fried cactus and bang bang shrimp. The building was first constructed as a log cabin in 1920, and that vibe is still present today in a setting that is both rustic and romantic. Sunday brunches are exceptional with Southern favorites like chicken and waffles and sausage and biscuits. There’s room for private parties in their wine cellar, and live music featuring local talent is often in the house.
• Pizza Inn of Henderson offers slightly more casual dining while still providing top-notch dishes and service. The dough is made fresh every day, and you’re sure to get your fill at their daily buffet. Try their loaded baked potato or the Spicy Asian Chicken pizza, or build your own creative pie.
