DURHAM, N.C. — The year 2020 has been stressful for many North Carolinians.
The families of McDougald Terrace kicked off January of 2020 by being evacuated from their homes after more than a dozen residents were sent to area hospitals with elevated levels of carbon monoxide. About 280 families spent many weeks in hotels while crews worked in their units.
While they were gone, some of their apartments were broken into, and items were stolen and vandalized.

Even before the pandemic began, many of them were struggling with health scares and violence in the area.

But on Sunday, a special event was aimed at helping those families leave all that struggle behind for a little while. Residents of McDougald Terrace came together for an uplifting moment.

Families gathered for free food, good music, and the main attraction: three-wheeled motorcycles from Bull City Slingerz. Organizers said it was an effort to bring the Durham community together in light of recent violence.

Kids were thrilled with the three-wheel motorcycles.

"It’s important for the kids to see Black men who work for living to obtain things and nice things, and we want them to see that hard work does pay off and that’s why we do what we do," said Arthur Smith with Bull City Slingerz, who helped organize the event.

Smith said his organization is dedicated to giving back. They gave out free food and clothing in preparation of colder weather.

Organizers also requested a presence from Durham Police officers to improve community relations.

"A lot of people have labeled the police as bad, and not all officers are bad. And they just... it's a good image for the kids to see," said Ashley Canady, a resident of McDougald Terrace.

Officials said Durham has seen a rise in gun violence since the start of the pandemic, with many involved being young adults. Organizers hope more events like these keep children out of trouble.
