Sparta Mayor Wes Brinegar and other local officials provide an update on damage from a recent earthquake, the recovery effort and availability of funds for rebuilding.
when August 9 2020 on a Smarter went under a 5.1 earthquake experienced it at 807 a. M. We had eight foreshocks before that point, and we've had 20 aftershocks since that. Since that 5.1 earthquake, we are hearing continuous rumbles throughout our community here in town and in Allegheny County. But we thank the Good Lord to this day that there has been no injuries or fatalities again. I want to thank you for coming. I have a couple of guest speakers that will be speaking here in the moment as soon as we're done with our press conference, everyone here will be made available so that you may ask them questions afterwards on a one on one basis. Please remember that we have several citizens that are displaced and those that are suffering with the loss of their homes and having anxiety issues over every little rumble. But I want to commend all those that are doing such an awesome work. I'll start off by doing with our emergency management coordinator, Daniel Road. Here's the staff made up of volunteers, mostly that have answered the phones for over a week now and went out done a diligent duty to serve our community. You'll hear more from him in just a moment, but also like to command my Sparta maintenance work crew for tirelessly getting out fixing water leagues that we've had its current sewer problems that we have right now. Also, kudos to my staff. Here is the town office. We're doing all that they do. I would also like to thank our state local officials that have reached out to us. I appreciate that. And Governor Cooper, who visited here last week, Samaritans, Purse and other generous organizations have also reached out with their hands to offer their help. Tremendous effort. Today I have with me Mike Family from Richard Burr, U. S Senator representing him and Stephanie Blair from U. S Senator Thom Tillis. His office chief Bob Lane Daniel wrote County chairperson Bill Osborn, Sheriff Brian Maine's. All of these individuals have went to great lengths to take care of our people, and for that we should all be thanked. But this time I'm gonna turn it over to our emergency management coordinator. Daniel wrote in to give you some statistics and update it will re stand. Thank you Good afternoon is west. Mention my name is Daniel wrote, and I'm the Allegheny County Emergency Management Director. I want to give everyone a little update on our current situation in the county and in the town. Sparta Damage assessments are currently still ongoing. As of close of business yesterday we have received approximately 525 reports of damage. Some of these air there a monitor. Some of them are very severe. Local officials and engineers from the state's response team have been and will continue to evaluate the structures. Currently we've evaluated. 60 of these is having major damage. We define major damages, losing 40% of the value of that structure. At the moment, the Red Cross is housing 19 individuals from 10 different families. The school system did sustain some damage. I've had several questions about schools, but I want the folks of this county to rest assured that the school system has taken the necessary steps to ensure the safety of all their students and all their faculty. We did submit our preliminary damage assessment to the States Recovery division yesterday before close of business, and we're hoping for a quick response from those folks so that the people that need our help get it in closing. I just want to say thank you to the town of Sparta and its staff and all of the staff from Allegheny County that has supported me during this difficult time. Those folks have been wonderful, so thank you. Have a great day with again. I just want to re emphasize it. Then you will be available after this conference press conference to answer any additional questions you may have. Okay, But I cannot tip my hat anymore, then to say thank you, Daniel. Tireless hours. Do you have spent taking phone calls going out with your staff review in our cities? It's home, sir. Thank you very much for your dedication. This time I'm introduced our county chairperson of the county Commissioners, Mr Bill Osborn. Thank you, Mayor Gregor. I want to thank everybody for coming out today and you've done heard the statistics and all about that I won't talk about hopefully the state and federal well kick in monies for some people that are playing out placed out of their homes today. We haven't has it. It's off their foundation walls cracked brake is separate and there's a great need. We hope to state. Federal will certainly step up and help alga can because we've never had the need for earthquake insurance before. But there is a need now and just like everybody else, I want to really say a big thank you to our employees. They've never went through that like s and everybody got on board early Sunday morning. It became apparent very quick. There was big, big need here and a lot of damage. So what? Three o'clock in that afternoon? So in the afternoon, Daniel now called emergency meeting of the Board of Commissioners to declare state of emergency for Al Game can. And then everything followed. Met that day forward all the assessments being the role in and that's going a great job. And I just want to come in the moment job they have done for our county. Our citizens, they took every step necessary to make sure that our citizens were safe and well taken. Care off. Rip Birkin. Red Cross is involved. Got some people in housing there. So just in closing, I just I won't think everybody's been involved with this Mayor Burger well have a good working relationship, Daniel. Route the mess, Sheriff's Department and all the volunteers. It's sit down and answer the phones. I know they worked the first week, the weekend, in the second week, non stop writes right on through to take care of the needs of our can. And to that, I say a big thank you. You're one of to sum up our little press conference here. I want to emphasize the need for continued prayers and in reaching out to our legislators in Raleigh and in Washington. We need your help. The only population here in our community cannot afford to fix their homes because the insurance is not going to cover it. Don't forget about sport of in Allegheny County into the citizens of this county and this town. It is very important that if you haven't already, and you need to need some help to call it in. If you haven't had your property checked out, please call it in. We need to get out there, look at it and assess the damage. I also want to reach out and say to this toe, all folks do not follow for any scams that you see that are appearing on Facebook, the town of Sparta, nor the county of Allegheny. Has any go fund? Me? Page is Please, please do not donate to somebody that you don't know. We are not affiliated with those in any way. Also, there are construction crews that are going around the pertaining to be construction crews that are trying to say they will fix a job for $500. Folks give him $500 and they don't see him again. I encourage all of our citizens not to fall for these scams or these people that make sure that the work is done and done properly before you pay anybody. And that just makes good business sense. Do not get cheated out of your money. If you give and donate to the American Red Cross, please put on their Allegheny County North Carolina earthquake. That way, the money will reach those that need it here In the months, on behalf of the citizens of Sparta in Allegheny County, we thank you the press for your coverage of our disaster. I command you.
