N.C. — Classically trained musicians from across the globe will be performing a charity benefit concert in Raleigh this week.
A Tempo, Il Soldato & Friends, which plays Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, features Spanish mezzo-soprano opera singer María José Montiel, cellist Ángel Luis Quintana and lead pianist Laurence Verna. Pianist Toni Pearson, director of St. Louis Children's Hospital's Cerebral Palsy Center, will be joining the show as a special guest.

The Raleigh show marks the launch of the Columbus Children Foundation, the United States branch of the global children's charity, Fundación Columbus. The Columbus Children Foundation's goal is to increase access to the most advanced and effective therapies to help children suffering from ultra-rare and life-threatening neurodegenerative diseases.

"There is a harmony and universal language shared between music and medical discovery, and we are fortunate to intertwine the two in order to advance therapies for children suffering from rare diseases," Columbus Children Foundation trustee Robert Long said.

The foundation also has local roots. University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill Drs. Richard Jude Samulski and Xiao Xiao are scientific advisors to the foundation and serve on its scientific advisory board.

Raleigh's show will feature music by Spanish composers Falla and Montsalvatge and French music. Quintana will play the Il Soldato, a cello that has been passed down from one master cellist to another since the 1800s.

These renowned Spanish artists are only playing three shows in the states. They will be traveling to Washington, D.C. and Naples, Florida. next.
