Southern Pines police probe indecent exposure case

Police are trying to identify a man who exposed himself to a woman walking in the 100 block of East Rhode Island Avenue on Thursday morning.

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Police are trying to identify a man who exposed himself to a woman walking in the 100 block of East Rhode Island Avenue on Thursday.

The victim told police that around 10:15 a.m., the man came up behind her and tried to start a conversation. When she turned around, she saw the man exposing himself to her, police said.

Police said they are looking for a bald, white man, standing about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 220 pounds.

The victim said he drove away in a dingy, white Chevrolet pickup truck, with a long bed and standard cab.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call Southern Pines Police Department Investigation Division at 910-692-7031.

Police offered personal-safety tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Be observant of suspicious persons or circumstances.
  • Walk with a friend if possible.
  • Stay on sidewalks or in well-lit, well-traveled areas.
  • Let someone know where you are going and when to expect you to return.
  • If you have a cellular phone, keep it handy, and call 911 immediately if you see something suspicious.
  • If someone exposes themselves to you, contact the police, and give a thorough description of the person, vehicle and the direction of travel.
