SPRING LAKE, N.C. — The Harnett County Sheriff's Office on Friday arrested Joshua Douglass and charged him with murder in the shooting death of his mother.

Douglass, 24, of Sanford, allegedly shot Sharon Sikora, 41.

She was found dead at 480 Archie St. in Spring Lake. He was arrested during the predawn hours Friday in Lee County, authorities said.

Police have not yet said what prompted the killing, but a neighbor told WRAL News that the man was inside the home helping his mother move furniture when he apparently pulled out a gun and shot her at point blank range.

Marlene Troutman said she heard Sikora on the phone speaking to someone during a heated conversation. It was not clear if that conversation was related to her slaying, however.

The sheriff's office released the call made to 911 about the shooting.

"He was here arguing with his mama (and) just pulled out a gun and shot her!" the call told the dispatcher. "I took off running out the front door (and) he jumped in a little black Toyota and took off."

Deputies were called to the home shortly after 8:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found Sikora dead at the residence.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they canvassed the area to find any leads.

It was not clear if deputies have recovered the murder weapon or where it was found.

While investigators try to determine what led to the shooting, they don't believe anyone else will be arrested in connection with the slaying.

"I think this is going to be an isolated thing right now," Maj. Arron Meredith said. "Investigators are going through their investigation process right now."

Family friend Andrew Earnest was saddened to hear about the killing.

"They were good people," he said. "As far as I know, I've never seen them do anything wrong."
