RALEIGH, N.C. — Thursday was a scary day for many at Arbor Creek Apartments in Raleigh after a fire broke out on the first floor. Some people had to jump to safety from a second floor window.

Though no one was injured, everyone in the 12 units had to be evacuated.

Some of the families told WRAL News they were emotional and still in shock.

Dylan Gallagher was in the kitchen when he smelled something strange.

“We smelled something burning and we weren’t sure if it was something where we were at, we went and checked around the apartment,” said Gallagher. "We had to go out through the window.”

A fire that started on the first floor quickly filled the 12-unit building with flames and smoke.

Two people jumped from a second floor window. Others, like Gallagher and his family, were helped down a ladder.

Gallagher said his father is a former volunteer firefighter and, because of his experience, he was able to remain calm and act quickly. Otherwise, he says, things could have turned out differently.

“It might’ve been a lot harder to just rationalize and keep the pace," said Gallagher. "I know people are shaken up and it’s hard to get through things like this.”

Gallagher said it felt unreal, but he’s glad everyone is okay.

Of the 12 units that were evacuated, two families were displaced. The rest were able to return to their homes.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
